There is no shortage of ways to celebrate the Fourth of July in Sarasota, whether your ideal holiday includes fireworks on the water, a beach day that turns into a sunset show, a family-friendly parade, or a full day of food, music and local festivities.
This year feels especially meaningful as communities across the country celebrate America’s 250th birthday, and Sarasota-area neighborhoods are bringing plenty of red, white and blue energy to the weekend.
From downtown Sarasota and Siesta Key to Lakewood Ranch, Longboat Key and Venice, here are some of the best ways to spend the Fourth of July in and around Sarasota this year.
For a classic Sarasota Fourth of July experience, head downtown to Bayfront Park for the City of Sarasota’s annual fireworks celebration.
The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, lighting up Sarasota Bay with one of the area’s most recognizable holiday traditions. It is free to attend, and the Bayfront offers plenty of room to settle in with friends, family, blankets and lawn chairs before the show begins.
For those who prefer to make a full evening of it, consider enjoying dinner downtown beforehand, walking around The Bay or finding a waterfront reservation before heading toward the Bayfront for fireworks.
There are few places that feel more like Sarasota on the Fourth of July than Siesta Key.
The 35th Annual Siesta Key Fourth of July Fireworks will take place at Siesta Beach, with the event scheduled from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Fireworks are expected to launch at dusk, creating the perfect ending to a beach day with family or friends.
Arrive early, enjoy the water, grab dinner in Siesta Village and plan to stay through sunset. Siesta Key is always one of the most popular places to be on the holiday, so expect traffic and limited parking. A little extra planning is worth it for fireworks over one of the area’s most beautiful beaches.
For anyone looking to celebrate before July 4, Fireworks on the Lake at Nathan Benderson Park is one of the biggest events of the holiday weekend.
Taking place on Friday, July 3, the event includes live music, food trucks, family activities, a kids zone and fireworks expected around 9 p.m. It is a great option for families who want a full evening out, or for anyone who would rather keep July 4 open for a beach day, backyard gathering or another local event.
Nathan Benderson Park offers plenty of room for a more festival-style celebration, making it a strong choice for those who enjoy live entertainment and a lively crowd.
Lakewood Ranch’s Star-Spangled Spectacular at Waterside Place is a great choice for families looking for a little more than fireworks.
From 6 to 9 p.m. on July 4, the event will include carnival games, food vendors, a kids zone, live entertainment and a performance from the Circus Arts Conservatory. The evening will wrap with a drone show at 9 p.m.
This is an especially fun option for residents of Lakewood Ranch, families with younger children or anyone who wants a festive community event without having to plan an entire day around the beach.
Longboat Key’s annual Freedom Fest Parade and Festival offers a more classic, small-town-style Fourth of July celebration.
The morning event begins at 9 a.m. at Bicentennial Park and includes a patriotic parade, entertainment, family activities, games, music, food and even a petting zoo. It is a great choice for families, grandparents visiting for the holiday or anyone who loves the charm of a traditional community celebration.
After the festivities, you can spend the rest of the day enjoying Longboat Key’s beaches, dining nearby or heading back toward Sarasota for evening fireworks.
Venice is making the Fourth of July a full-day celebration this year, beginning with a parade through historic downtown at 9:30 a.m.
The parade will be followed by a community picnic at 11 a.m., giving residents and visitors an easy way to spend the holiday together before fireworks begin at 9 p.m. It is a particularly great option for anyone who enjoys Venice’s small-town charm, historic downtown and relaxed coastal pace.
The combination of a morning parade, daytime picnic and evening fireworks makes Venice one of the most complete Fourth of July experiences in the Sarasota area.
The Fourth of July is one of Sarasota’s busiest weekends of the year, especially around beaches, downtown and waterfront areas. Plan to arrive early, bring water, sunscreen and a chair or blanket, and give yourself extra time for parking and traffic after the fireworks end.
For beach fireworks, consider making a full day of it rather than trying to arrive right before sunset. For downtown events, dinner reservations and parking plans can make the evening feel much more relaxed.
Most importantly, enjoy what makes Sarasota such a special place to celebrate. Whether you are watching fireworks over the bay, spending the day on Siesta Key, cheering at a hometown parade or gathering with friends in your own backyard, the Fourth of July is one of those weekends that reminds you how much there is to love about living here.
